Functional membranes for the electrochemical recovery of organic acids published in Advanced Functional Materials!

Congrats to Nayeong and Jiho for their recently published paper on the design of functional membranes for the electrochemical recovery of succinic acid from fermentation streams!

Our work was recently published in Advanced Functional Materials, and demonstrates a layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte functionalization approach for controlling ion-selectivity, to achieve the multicomponent separation of organic acids in a redox-flow electrodialysis platform. This work highlights how coupling membrane design, characterization, and evalation with electrochemical engineering enables the continuous purification of value-added organic acids from fermentation mixtures. This work provides an important step towards process intensification and the electrification of separation technologies in biomanufacturing.
