Sustainable electrochemical recycling of lithium-ion batteries published in Nature Communications!

Congrats to Kwiyong for a recently published paper on the selective separation of cobalt and nickel by electrodeposition for lithium-ion battery recycling!

Our work was recently published in Nature Communications, and investigates the combined interface and electrolyte control for multicomponent recovery of cobalt and nickel. Through functionalized electrodes and control of salt concentration, cobalt and nickel selectivity can be tuned. High purity recovery of both metals are achieved even from commercially sourced lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide electrodes. The work had significant contributions from Darien Raymond and Riccardo Candeago, and was highlighted by UIUC news as a promising pathway for sustainable battery recycling!
