This work was recently published in ACS Energy Letters and selected as the supplementary journal cover. The study addresses the fundamental limitations of e-LLE by designing a redox-active extractant that enables direct electrochemical cycling without external redox reagents or added supporting electrolyte. The molecular architecture integrates alkyl chains to tune hydrophobicity, a permanently charged ammonium group to impart ionic conductivity in organic media, and a ferrocene redox center to enable selective and reversible electrochemical extraction. The platform achieved 89% selective gold recovery from electronic waste leachates with a separation factor of 35, while techno-economic analysis demonstrated significant reductions in both capital (CAPEX) and operating (OPEX) costs.
