Congratulations to Riccardo and Nidhish on their recently published paper modeling multistage redox-mediated electrodialysis for volatile fatty acid fractionation.

This work was recently published in Journal of The Electrochemical Society and selected as the Editor’s Choice. This study develops a finite element model of multistage redox-mediated electrodialysis for the fractionation of a ternary mixture of monoanionic volatile fatty acids (propionic, butyric, and hexanoic acids referred to as C3, C4, C6, respectively). Five multistage architectures were considered and compared to a single stage unit with equivalent membrane area, to evaluate output purity, productivity, and energy consumption. The MATLAB–COMSOL modeling framework developed here provides a clear path for incorporating cost optimization into the design of multistage redox electrodialysis systems.
